The Prophetic Lens

Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old student at Delta State University, was found hanging from a tree near the campus pickleball courts on the morning of September 15, 2025 (Snopes, 2025). A faculty member discovered his body around 7:05 a.m., prompting immediate notification of university police (Snopes, 2025). Preliminary examinations by the Bolivar County coroner reported no signs of physical assault, such as broken bones, lacerations, or contusions, though a full autopsy is pending at the Mississippi State Crime Lab (News From the States, 2025).

Multiple agencies—including the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Bolivar County Sheriff’s Department, Cleveland Police Department, and campus police—are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding his death (WLBT, 2025). While authorities have stated that no evidence of foul play has been found thus far, the manner of death has not yet been officially determined, leaving questions unanswered (ABC7, 2025).

Reed’s family, represented by attorneys including Ben Crump, has called for transparency and an independent autopsy to ensure accountability and clarity (Mississippi Free Press, 2025). In response, the university canceled classes and postponed centennial celebrations, issuing public statements of grief and support for Reed’s loved ones (ABC7, 2025).

From a biblical perspective, moments like these remind us of Christ’s warnings about the last days: “Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom” (Matthew 24:7, KJV). Racial tension and social unrest often inflame public reaction, but God’s Word also cautions us against hasty conclusions: “He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him” (Proverbs 18:13, KJV).

The Apostle Paul likewise exhorts believers to “prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21, KJV), reminding us to seek truth carefully in the midst of uncertainty. While the pain of loss is real and grief must be honored, Christians are called to respond with patience, discernment, and prayer, trusting God’s justice and timing in all things.

In this moment, it is important to avoid harmful comparisons. For example, just days earlier, Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old public figure, was murdered, leaving behind his wife and two young daughters. Reports state that when the gunshot went off, one of his daughters ran toward him out of fear. Regardless of political views, our response must be compassion.

Scripture makes it clear: “Thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 20:13, KJV). There is no justifiable biblical reason for murder. While Kirk was a known figure and Reed was not, both deaths grieve the heart of God. Yet, because of public perception, reactions will differ. Still, we must ask: what evidence exists to label Kirk a white supremacist? Why do we so quickly “jump into the wagon of racism”?

The United States is sick with the cancer of politics, a disease that blinds even Christians from viewing events through a biblical worldview. We are too quick to assign labels and too slow to show compassion.

As followers of Christ, we are called not only to pray for clarity in the case of Trey Reed but also to lift up the grieving Kirk family in prayer. Our hearts break for Reed’s death at such a young age and his family; just as they break for a wife and two daughters, suddenly left without a husband and father. Can we pause and take some time to grieve?

Yet, in both tragedies, we remember that vengeance belongs to God alone: “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord” (Romans 12:19, KJV). We will trust God, the righteous Judge, who will bring truth to light and justice in His time. Until then, we commit ourselves to prayer, compassion, the truth, and a Christ-centered perspective that refuses to let politics or prejudice cloud the command to love one another.
