Psalm 2 describes the general condition of governments worldwide, specifically as it refers to their combative and rebellious relationship with God. The Psalmist tells us in verse two,
“The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the Lord and against his anointed…” (NIV)
If you are a Christian and love to get involved in politics, understand what you are against; that at the roots of politics, friendship, and peace with God is not found. Politics, at its roots, is against Jesus Himself. In Psalm 2:10-12 the psalmist counsels the kings of the earth by stating the following:
Therefore, you kings, be wise;
be warned, you rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear
and celebrate his rule with trembling.
12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry
and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
If you don’t want to deal with God’s anger and if you don’t want to be destroyed, the psalmist tells you to do three simple things:
- Serve the Lord with fear: At the end of the day, you serve the people by serving the Lord first.
- Celebrate his rule with trembling: God is ultimately in charge, not you.
- Kiss the Son: Honor Jesus.
Sadly, we can conclude that 1) governments worldwide are not serving God but themselves. 2) They reject God’s rule, and 3) they dishonor and mock Jesus every time they get a chance. You guys want to walk around all dignified and prideful, but the Psalmist tells us that,
The One enthroned in heaven laughs;
the Lord scoffs at them.
5 He rebukes them in his anger
and terrifies them in his wrath… Psalm 2:4-5 (NIV)
This is not going to end well for you! You are a joke before God, and you will suffer His wrath sooner or later. So, this is not a Democrat or Republican issue, conservative or liberal. Serve the Lord with fear, celebrate His rule with trembling, and kiss Jesus. The true prosperity of a nation is found there.
