"Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roof." Matthew 10:27 (NIV)

The Prophetic Lens

God cares about your mental health just as much as your physical health. The Great King David gave us insight into Psychology by writing, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14 (KJV). Through King David, we can see that God is paying attention to what we say and think. David is praying that his word and thoughts be pleasing unto God.

In Proverbs 23:7, Salomon, David’s son, tells us, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…” (KJV). Salomon gave us the foundation for psychology according to God, establishing that the reality of who we are is found in how we think. So, we can manifest certain behaviors and even say certain things, and if our behaviors and words do not match what we are thinking, we are not being honest with ourselves, others, and, above all, God. We are what we think!

The Apostle Paul also enters the conversation of the Psychology of God by stating, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8 (KJV) The Apostle Paul gives us the focus of our thoughts.

The Apostle Paul continues to help us with the psychology of God as he states, “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;” 2 Corinthians 10:5 (KJV) Beloved, every thought must be challenged; every thought must be given to submit to the obedience of Christ. Every thought is tested by Jesus himself.

James, half-brother of Jesus, also gives us some powerful insight regarding the psychology of God. James 1:13-15 tells us, “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” (NIV)

James reminds us that at the end of the day, we can’t blame anybody for our emotions and the actions resulting from those emotions; it all comes from within; nobody makes us do anything. We work ourselves into frustration, anger, etc. We must take ownership of our thoughts, our emotions, and the decisions we make. Dr. Aldo Pucci speaks about this principle; he refers to it as the ABS of Emotions.[1]

In conclusion, we learned five principles of God’s Psychology:

  1. We learned through David that God is paying attention to our thoughts.
  2. We learn through Salomon that we are what we think.
  3. We learn through Paul what our minds must focus on.
  4. We also learn through Paul to submit every thought to the obedience of Christ.
  5. We learn from James, half-brother of Jesus, that we must take ownership of our thoughts, emotions, and decision-making.
